Better with Books - Reading workshop for parents, by Mrs Crook

Date: 29th Oct 2018 @ 2:33pm

Dear parents and carers,

We are pleased to announce a reading workshop that is being held at both the Forum Library and Longsight Library run by Family Learning.

Below is some information about the workshops.

'Better with Books' workshops are run by Family Learning at Forum Library on two separate evenings to help parents get children reading and enjoying books. The first workshop is all about enjoying sharing books with children. Parents don't need to be an expert reader and their child doesn't need to be reading yet. This one is all about enjoyment of books, how to make it fun and interesting and helping children develop a love of books. It’s ideal for parents with children between ages 2- 5 yrs. There will be group discussion sharing experiences and ideas and handouts giving advice and tips on good book sharing techniques and choosing books.

The second workshop is aimed at parents and carers with children who are learning to read at school. This session will go through ways of helping children work out new words as well as tips and advice on how to make the experience a positive one for both parent and child. It’s ideal for parents with children in Reception, Year 1 and Year 2. There will be group discussion sharing experiences and ideas and handouts giving advice and tips on helping children with reading.

Workshop 1  :

Forum Library -  Monday 12th November  5.30 - 7.00 pm

Longsight Library - Tuesday 27th November 6- .7.30pm

Workshop 2 :

Forum Library - Monday  19th November 5.30- 7.00 pm

Longsight Library - Tuesday 4th December 6- .7.30 pm

Places are limited to 8 parents / carers per workshop so parents need to book a place now by going along to the Library to sign up.

These sessions are for adults only and children cannot be brought along to the session. However, children over 8 are allowed to stay in the Library unaccompanied by an adult.

If parents cannot make the session at Forum Library and have transport some of them may be prepared to go to the sessions at Longsight Library.

CAFOD Family Fast Day, by Mrs Crook

Date: 4th Oct 2018 @ 2:12pm

Dear Parents and carers,

Tomorrow, Friday 5th October, is CAFOD Family Fast Day. At Mass today, Father Michael reminded us of when St. Francis fasted and to follow in his footsteps, we are asking children to bring in donations of food from home. By giving up our food we can help those in need in our wider community.

In return for this generosity, children are invited to come in to school tomorrow in their own clothes, and to BRIGHTEN UP FOR HARVEST! So wear your brightest clothes!

Our new Mini Vinnies will be collecting in the food and making up food parcels to give to our local Food Bank.

Thank you for your continued support in our fundraising.

Kind regards

Mrs Crook

Harvest Mass, by Mrs Crook

Date: 4th Oct 2018 @ 11:15am

Today, children went over to Church for Mass and celebrated the Harvest Festival. We offered our thanks to God for the wonderful food we have been given and offered our prayers to those who are in need.

A special thanks to Christopher Berrell, one of our Grandad's from Nursery, who baked a spectacular loaf of bread which was blessed in Church during Mass.

Nursery and Reception children used this as the focal point of their own Collective Worship in class.

Mission Together Visit 8th Feb 2018, by Mrs Crook

Date: 8th Feb 2018 @ 2:05pm

This morning, Sacred Heart children gave a very warm welcome to Mary Deardon from Mission Together. Mary came in to collect the money that school raised through various fundraising activities in support of AJ, a little boy in Sri Lanka.

Representatives from our Mini Vinnies presented Mary with a cheque for £400.00. Thank you to all our families who supported this.

Mary was then able to tell us that the money raised will be used to provide 400 Health Packs to children out in Sri Lanka. Previously, our fundraising had contributed to the building of a new toilet block and kitchen facilities, serving children over two times the number in Sacred Heart. What an achievement!

Mary finished her visit with a challenge. She has asked that we say the Mission Together prayer 10,000. If you would like to help us reach our goal the prayer is below:

We Pray,

May all children

In the world

Share love,

Share friendship

And live in the peace of God's love.

Now and forever,

Here is a very useful document from 4Children that outlines the developmental stages and age-related expectations that your child will be experiencing at each age.

Meeting Gobi - the little dog with the huge heart, by Miss Barnes

Date: 12th Jul 2017 @ 2:40pm

Meeting Gobi:

Today Miss Barnes and four year 3 pupils (Summer Peters, Oscar, Felicity and Alec) went to the Madeleine Lindley Book Centre to have lunch with Leon and Gobi.  We had a delicious lunch (see the pictures) and we bought copies of the book to read in September. We cannot wait for the film to come out! Gobi is already a star in our eyes!

In 2016, Dion Leonard, an ultramarathon runner, stumbled across a little stray dog while competing in a gruelling 155 mile race across the Gobi Desert. The pup earned the name 'Gobi', as she went step for step with Dion, keeping pace with him for nearly 80 miles. What Gobi lacked in size, she made up for in heart. Dion had always focused on winning, but as he witnessed the incredible determination of this small animal, he felt something inside him change.

Year 2 make seed balls!, by Mr Lavin

Date: 23rd Mar 2017 @ 1:35pm

This week Year 2 had a fab time making our very own Seed balls, which are now drying in a secret location in school (not to be mixed up with Deliciously Ella style Energy Balls!)

Apologies if some of the children got a bit messy but they had a great time mixing all the ingredients and learning about why we are going to grow the seeds in this way rather than just scattering them on the ground.

Take a look at the report below!
