What To Expect, When - Advice for Parents, by Mrs Fitzsimons

Date: 19th Oct 2015 @ 11:15pm

In our Foundation Stage classes at Sacred Heart, we get to know your child's knowledge and understanding through setting up play-based activities, adult-led focused activities and through observations of your child accessing and demonstrating their learning in our continuous provision (the resources and activities your child chooses themselves in the classroom).

Here is a very useful document from 4Children that outlines the developmental stages and age-related expectations that your child will be experiencing at each age.

Pop along to any Manchester library and register for the 'Big Read Summer Challenge.' There are so many amazing activities going on in your library this summer including: mask making, lego, music making, puppets, story telling, rhyme time, craft tables and many more.

We would love to see everybody with a certificate from their local library in September to say that they successfully completed the reading challenge!

Our Alien Friend!, by Mrs Fitzsimons

Aliens

This week, we have been using the large construction pieces outside to build our own rockets and imagine a journey to space. Somebody must've been watching because Mrs Fitzsimons received a very unusual e-mail the next day...

Reading Books, by Mrs Fitzsimons

Date: 3rd Nov 2015 @ 11:41pm

Thank you for all the fantastic reading you are doing at home! It's been great to hear all of your comments about how your child is getting on with their reading books and library books!

Just a  reminder that your child has a set day that their reading books will get changed. Their reading book will not be changed until it has been signed off and at least one comment has been written in their reading journals. It is also very important that your child brings their reading book to school everyday so that we can read with them if there is any spare time.

If you are finding that your child is becoming very familiar with their reading book, you could ask them to try and put the words in another sentence or write them out for spelling and handwriting practice. And of course, read your own books or library books in addition!

Big Talk!, by Mrs Fitzsimons

Date: 19th Oct 2015 @ 11:05pm

We do not set homework as such in Reception, as we believe that it is important that families have plenty of time after school to be together, to read together and also to enjoy each other’s company! Each week we will send home, as part of the newsletter, a picture, photo or image for you to look at with your child. These photos have been sourced from Google Images and Pinterest. They are interesting and unusual images chosen to encourage, develop and increase children’s vocabulary and listening skills.

Ask your child questions about the picture – What do you think is happening in the picture? Who? Why? Where? How? When? Tell them your own opinions about the picture and then ask for their opinions and how it makes them feel.

We hope you enjoy this week’s image - a fantastic Autumn picture by J. Petra. Can you think of 2 sentences to say about this picture?

Wow Moments!, by Mrs Fitzsimons

Date: 19th Oct 2015 @ 11:03pm

We would love to hear more about the exciting, new or clever things your child gets up to at home! We call these moments “Wow Moments” - when your child does something that makes you feel proud and really shows their developing learning and understanding.

These moments are totally individual to your child, and can be as simple as “Tom put his socks on all by himself”, “Carla rode her bike without any stabilisers”, “Emily read number 57 at the bus stop” or “Charlie wrote his full name without any help”. They can be quotes from your child that really impressed you, e.g. “Gemma said, ‘Mum, it must be Autumn because those leaves are turning browny-yellow’”” or just a simple description of something lovely that your child has done.

We would love to share and celebrate these moments with you, so please find attached a page of “Wow” stars. When you would like to share a “Wow Moment” with us, just fill in one of these stars and send it into school with your child. Please feel free to e-mail us with your child’s “Wow Moments” too!

Foundation Stage Topics, by Mrs Fitzsimons

Date: 21st Jan 2015 @ 11:32pm

Here is the Yearly Overview of the topics we cover in our Nursery and Reception classes. This year 2015-16, we are following Cycle 2.

The Troll!, by Mrs Fitzsimons

Date: 3rd Mar 2015 @ 12:30pm

We have been reading the Three Billy Goats Gruff over the last week. As Mrs Fitzsimons and Mr Martin-Bird came into Reception this morning, Mrs Fitzsimons noticed a letter left on her computer from.....

the Troll!!!

The children helped us to read it and were absolutely horrified! They suggested that we need to try to stop him in some way. How could we stop this naughty troll from scaring away the harmless goats???

The Shopping Basket - Reception, by Mrs Fitzsimons

Date: 21st Jan 2015 @ 11:27pm

The Reception class have been reading an hilarious book by John Burningham, called 'The Shopping Basket'. They have been writing shopping lists to help Stephan remember what he was supposed to buy, counting items he needed to buy, matching with the correct numbers, and also putting numbered food items to 20 in order. They have created some fantastic story maps to show Stephan's journey to the shops. They used their excellent phonic knowledge to write their own labels.
